Through the door we heard country music
We thought our friend Jen had recommended us wrong

She didn't, we discovered (in a few more songs)
When the country band bowed and left the small stage

Another band setup
they all looked like students

They played and played
turning smoky air hot
The smell of burnt cheese was overtaken by sweat
By the time they were done their feet smelled like bellybuttons, or Funions

Like mucus
like everyone in the room had a cold

Then their set was over and some drunks begged for more
we all went home more satisfied than before

more satisfied than when the band arrived
more satisfied than when the friends arrived
but mostly satisfied that we arrived (at all)

Art today reflects the past
and connects it to the present

depressing
obsessing

refreshing
is impressing
is bad odds investing

Art today is rustling
is a nestling
That will hatch from
ideas that are festering

Art is born from a science of creativity
as wine is born from chemical activity
liberating
inhibiting

Art is contributing
to many things
And is absolutely necessary to human beings
